Using a bump key to open a door is an extremely effective technique that can be learned with some practice. This method allows unprotected cylinder locks to be opened almost without leaving a trace in just a few seconds. When a bump key is used, it leaves a subtle impression on the lock, just below the keyway. However, the marks left by a single use are minimal and hardly visible to the untrained eye.

With repeated use on the same lock, however, the hard material of the bump key causes significant wear. Therefore, bump keys are not suitable for daily use in opening doors.
